Twitter Officially Launches New Citing Tweet Counter on Main Tweet Display
On September 14, 2020 by adminAfter being spotted testing it last week, Twitter has officially unveiled its new standalone list for the “Quote Tweets” count on the main tweet screen.
As we reported last week, Twitter launched a new separate list of “Retweets” and “Retweets with comments” in tweet details back in May to provide more transparency in interactions. Shortly thereafter, Twitter changed the wording of the main list of “retweets” to more inclusive “retweets and comments” to make it easier for users to understand what this counter includes.
But this still meant that retweets, tweets with quotes were included in a single bill on the main display, which at first glance is still a little unclear. Later tests showed that Twitter tried out “Quotes” and “Citing Tweets” as separate list titles along with the number of “retweets”. “Quotes” seemed more suitable for displaying the top level as they took up less space, but could also be confusing as to what that really means. Does this mean quotes in a tweet? The people who quoted this?
It might sound like a pedantic distinction, but Twitter has been working to make its platform easier to understand in the past few years after various feedback reports suggested that tweets were difficult to handle for some. This may have stopped some people from registering for an account – and when you look at it from that perspective, small changes like these make a difference, even if in a functional sense they don’t have much impact.
Now Twitter has settled on “Quote Tweets,” which it thinks is easy enough to understand. This will make it easier to see all the tweet response activity at a glance, which can help provide more context – and a completely new accounting for tweet ratio for related comments.
It’s also worth noting that with Twitter recently launched its new response management feature, if a user restricts who can respond, quoting tweets may be the only way for most to respond. They will now be listed on the tweet screen, which can also provide a level of accountability.
This is not a major change, but it is relevant, and it will make it easier to see how people are reacting to each tweet, which could even trigger more interaction like this.
