TikTok has provided an update on its efforts to remove hate speech and offensive content on its platform, and, oddly enough, has taken pictures on other social platforms for their efforts in the past.
First, though TikTok’s own efforts, the platform reports that more than 380,000 videos have been removed in the United States since the beginning of 2020 for violating the hate speech policy.
According to TikTok:
We’ve also blocked over 1,300 accounts for hateful content or behavior and removed over 64,000 hate comments. To be clear, these numbers do not represent 100% success in identifying every piece of hate content or behavior, but they do indicate our commitment to action.
Without relative comparison, it is difficult to understand what these numbers actually represent, but they show that TikTok is taking action and working to address some of the key problem areas, which is very important when you consider that more than a third of its daily users in the US are under the age of 14.
TikTok says it uses a number of measures to detect and limit the spread of hate speech, including redirecting people looking for offensive content to its guidelines and policies:

Which is especially interesting given the past controversy over TikTok’s moderation decisions.
Earlier this year, The Intercept published sections of TikTok’s internal rules that included instructions for moderators to suppress messages posted by users that they deemed too ugly, too bad, or too disabled for the platform. It has been argued that promoting content from such users will not help keep viewers’ attention on the platform. Moderators were also tasked with censoring political speech in certain contexts.
